This is a Blewbury event which took place on Wenesday 2 October 2024.
We used the Advantage Handicapping system in 13 Point games. Everyone played 6 games with different partners.
12 players entered, but unfortunately David Long had to withdraw at the last minute through illness. So 11 competitors played in pairs against another pair. Pairs were made up of a High Handicapper and a Low Handicapper. Pairings changed after each round. The winners were the individual High and Low Handicapper with the most wins,
The winners were Steve Fisher (Low) and Sandy Millikin (High) both with 5 wins.
Runners-Up were Dave Grinstead (Low) and Bruce Gibson (High) with 4 wins each.
A good day was had by all in this fun end of season competition.
Simon Bryant qualified in the Club heat. But unfortunately they did not perform their best at Phyllis Court in the Area Final. So Blewbury we’re not represented in the National Final.

Competition Format: This is a National Competition with Area Finals and a National Final.
It is open to all GC players with a GC Handicap.
It will be played off Handicap using the Advantage System.
The format for our Qualifying Round depends on the number of entries, we may need more than one day. I have provisionally booked Courts on Saturday 8 June and Sunday 9 June. It could be a Block system or a Knock Out.
Further details and rules of the competition will be posted after the Closing Date when our final numbers are confirmed.
Conditions: If we have 4 players in our Qualifying Round; this will allow 1 player to go through to the Area Final. If we have 8 players we are allowed 2 players to go through, and so on.
Entry Fee is £8 per player, this goes to the National Organiser of the Competition.

Peter Allan qualified for the Semifinals through both his lives. The other semifinalists were John Garnett and Dave Grinstead. Peter went straight to the Final leaving John and Dave to battle it out for a place in the Final. Their games ebbed and flowed with John coming out on top with 7-6 and 7-4 wins. Peter was trying to regain the trophy he had won the previous two years. However, John toppled Peter with his jumps, clearances and good hoop running, winning 7-5 and 7-6. Well done John.

There were eight players at Phyllis Court Croquet Club and eight at Blewbury Croquet Club on July 22-23 for the annual shared GC B-level (+3) tournament.. The Saturday split was seeded and drawn to divide the competitors evenly between the two venues for the all play all format.
In blustery wind and rain on Saturday, all players dug in to complete their seven games. For those at Blewbury, the highlight was Philippa’s fantastic lunch. When the top four from each venue gathered at Phyllis Court to compete for The Cup on Sunday, compliments were flying. You’re a hero, Philippa.
Paul waits while Brian lines up
Congratulations to Paul Wolff for making the Phyllis Court cut for Sunday and for finishing 4th.. Meanwhile, Brian Jamieson and Steve Fisher regrouped on home courts to contest The Plate. By the afternoon, intermittent showers had given way to sunshine, inviting a shift to shorts and shirt sleeves.
When the hoops were counted after 14 games, it was business as usual.. Peter Adams (Guildford & Godalming Croquet Club) retained The Cup he won in 2022. Likewise Beryl Hughes (Cheam Croquet Club) held onto The Plate
As a first time Tournament Manager for Blewbury, I was greatly impressed by the camaraderie between the players. I appreciated Chris Roberts’s seamless paperwork and the regular updates that kept Blewbury in the loop. Sorting out two carelessly abandoned mallets that were required at Phyllis Court on Sunday was more of a chore. Once I’d identified their owners with numerous photos and phone calls, Paul stepped up to return them before play the next morning. One of the culprits was Peter Adams; as he said himself, no mallet no Cup.

The Blewbury internal qualifying round of the above competition took place on 13 June 2023. It was a hot sunny day, meaning a lot of water was consumed during the afternoon.
Congratulations to David Vincent on his win, he was victorious is all three of his games. However, He did have his hands full with Minty in his final game for the first place, with both on two wins. Minty had a favourable Starting Score against David, Minty +2 to David’s-1. Minty stormed ahead having only two hoops left to run after hoop five. David dug in to equal at five all. However, Minty won the next hoop, now 6-5 to Minty. However, David’s experience shone through and eventually won 7-6.
Very well done to David and good luck in Bath on 13 August in the Area Finals.
